Keyword Density in SEO - How to Place Keywords in Content

Last week, I was requested by one of the readers of Tips2secure blog to write an article about how we should place keywords in our content so that we can avoid keyword stuffing. He also requested to add a sample of writing.

So, today I am writing this post which will help you to understand following key points

1. What is Keyword Density?
2. What is Keyword stuffing? How it affects SEO of your websites?
3. What are the ways to Avoid Keyword stuffing?

If I am not mistaken, I already answered all above given three questions in some of the articles published on this blog, but not in detail. But in this post, I am focusing and writing in depth about this with examples, which will help readers in understanding the concept of Keyword density and stuffing.

Scenario of Websites and SEO has been totally changed. I published a post on this topic with title, "What is important for SEO in 2016", you should read that also.

Keyword Density [SEO]

Keyword density in SEO

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page.

For example, if you have a Web page with exactly 1000 words on it, including all headlines, captions, alt text, and advertising, and you have a keyword phrase that is on the page 30 times, your keyword density is 3%.

Some related terms with Keyword density are:

1. Keyword proximity

Keyword proximity refers to closeness of keywords.

For example:

How to create a blog in blogger

How to create and design a blog in blogger

Using the example above, if someone searched for "how to create a blog," a web page containing the first sentence is more likely to rank higher than the second.

2. Keyword prominence

Keyword prominence is strategy to placing the keyword in your website where search engines like Google will look for them. The general recommendation is to place important keywords at, or near, the start of a web page, sentence, TITLE or META tag. It is not a massive SERP factor but it is vital.

What should keyword density be?

There is no single optimal or universal keyword density percentage. Each search query is unique & search engines compare (or normalize) documents against other top documents to determine some of their specific thresholds. To understand this in depth we will have to learn about keyword stuffing that has mentioned in the below-given paragraph.

Here is the video by Google’s Matt Cutts on Ideal Keyword Density of a page. You should never miss this video uploaded by Google webmasters on Youtube.

Also there is an important point which you should know that when Google rolled out the first Penguin update in April of 2012, they also rolled out some on-page classifiers which penalized some pages that had excessive word repetition.

Keyword Stuffing

According to Google,

"Keyword stuffing" refers to the practice of loading a webpage with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site's ranking in Google search results. Often these keywords appear in a list or group, or out of context (not as natural prose). Filling pages with keywords or numbers results in a negative user experience, and can harm your site's ranking. Focus on creating useful, information-rich content that uses keywords appropriately and in context.

Example,

Repeating the same words or phrases so often that it sounds unnatural, for example:

We sell custom cigar humidors. Our custom cigar humidors are handmade. If you’re thinking of buying a custom cigar humidor, please contact our custom cigar humidor specialists at custom.cigar.humidors@example.com.

In the past behaviors of search engine optimization, keyword stuffing used to work better in website rankings. But these days it has become unethical practice which may lead websites to be penalized by Google and major search engines. It may make you lose all your website rankings.

I know, after reading all this, you might thinking of what is the optimal keyword density to avoid stuffing?

Well, I have already done some researches to support my answers what I am going to tell you here.

First of all, I would like to mention here that I asked this same question to Russ Jones in the interview with him. Russ Jones is working as Principal Search Scientist at MOZ company.

He replied me,

There is no reason to keyword stuff at all any longer. You will see little to no incremental improvement in search results by simply adding the same keyword over and over again. Instead, you should be including related terms to increase the overall relevance of the document. You can use tools like nTopic to help find related words and phrases. In general, you don't need to use your keyword more than 3 times in your page - in the title, meta description, and once in the body.

Now what you are thinking? I know it is not possible to have control on adding keywords in that manner. Sometimes, it becomes necessary to use that keyword more than the times suggested by Russ Jones in content to give proper meaning to articles.

I have some cool tips to avoid keyword stuffing and write your content well.

Tips to Avoid Keyword stuffing

Years ago, people used to create content with a high keyword density and then place it on their website in an effort to try to rank more effectively for those terms and phrases. Unfortunately, this results in Web site content that was a struggle to read for normal people. But now, those tactics to rank content have been dead.

Here are some tips to improve your writing and content.

1. Use Synonyms of your keyword in articles.

(Synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language, for example shut is a synonym of close.)

Yes, here I mean to use the same formula that is asked by teachers to IELTS students to use synonyms instead of repeating the same word to score good marks and band.

Don't worry, Google and other major search engines consider synonyms as the original search term. You may have noticed that sometimes when we search for some terms, it shows the results of related phrases of that word. Each search engine has it's own vocabulary system which helps them understand related words.

2. If you are not able to avoid using keyword again and again then increase the length of your content.

3. Use keyword density checker tools. I recommend you to use Keyword density analyser tool by Seobook.

4. Use pronouns instead of using again and again same keyword.

(Pronoun is a word that can function as a noun phrase used by itself and that refers either to the participants in the discourse (e.g. I, you ) or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in the discourse (e.g. she, it, this ).

Example,

Wrong way to include keywords:

Yesterday I started my new blog. My new blog is based on technology tips. Name of my new blog is Techno Tips. I know my new blog would perform better in SERP's.

Correct way to write the above written sentence:

Yesterday I started my new blogIt is based on technology tips. Name of that blog is Techno Tips. I know it would perform better in SERP's.

In above example, 'my new blog' was the targeted keyword. But in the second sentence, I wrote the sentence again by replacing the keyword with pronouns to reduce the repetition of same word again and again.

Conclusion

Each search engine has it's own algorithm for rankings, some might place more weight on the above domain-wide & offsite factors, while others might put a bit more weight on on-page content. Due to web spam, density by itself is a fairly poor measure of relevancy. Always do write for people, your readers, audiences, never for search engine bots.

Above given tips are very useful to avoid keyword stuffing in your writing. I also use the same strategies given above while I write my blog posts. I don't care a lot for search engine crawlers but I care my blog readers. I always try to write the content in a way that will make my readers satisfy with what they are reading.

That time has gone, when people ranked their articles and posts in Google just by doing article spinning and stuffing. Now, bots work like a human while ranking any content. They always give higher rank to quality not to quantity of keywords.
